The Great American Songbook by Out of the Blue Jazz at theSpace @ Surgeons’ Hall delivered exactly what it promised – a selection of standards in swing jazz style.
Singer Caroline, with her five backing musicians, has a strong singing voice, and gave powerful renditions of such classics as My Funny Valentine, Blue Moon, and Pennies from Heaven. It was a pleasant, enjoyable, performance, but somehow I felt there was something missing. It can be difficult performing in such an anonymous sort of space as many Fringe venues are, but it felt to me that there was nothing personal in this performance, nothing to indicate why these songs had been chosen, and just a lack of connection with the audience. Having said that, if you simply want to listen to jazz standards delivered in professional style by an undoubtedly talented band, then this just might be for you.
