On a High Note theSpace @ Surgeons Hall Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2019 Review Thursday 15th August

With Edinburgh Entertainment & Arts

On A High Note at the Space @ Surgeons’ Hall is a new piece of operatic theatre written and performed by soprano Erin Alexander, accompanied by Nick Miller on keyboards.

On A High Note tells the story of Graziella Sciutti, a contemporary of Maria Callas, who gained fame and popularity during the 1950s particularly for her performance of soubrette roles in Mozart operas, characters such as Zerlina, Susanna and Despina. I have to admit that I am relatively new to opera, and hadn’t heard of Sciutti until today, so this whole story was entirely new to me.

Erin Alexander told the story with great warmth and passion, punctuated of course by highly accomplished renditions of many great arias such as “Saper Vorreste” from Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera, and “Quando Me’n Vo’” from Puccini’s La Boheme, as well as the Mozart roles for which she was famed.

This was a very enjoyable performance, which I would highly recommend to any opera fans, but one thing which would have greatly added to my enjoyment was having a simple programme listing the arias to be performed
