Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2018 Mess Greenside @ Nicolson Square - Lime Studio Review Monday 13th August

With Edinburgh Entertainment & Arts

Mess at Greenside @ Nicolson Square - Lime Studio is a production from Roar Toast Productions - a new musical written by Michael Dahl Rasmussen and Imogen Halsey, and from the moment I saw a snippet of this show at Greenside’s press launch, it was on my “to review” list.  One of the reasons for this, apart from being intrigued by its story, was the fact that this is a production with new words and music that has obviously had a lot of thought put into its creation.  As a reviewer, I always feel that original work like this should be supported wherever possible.

Mess takes us to a place we have all been in, and irrespective of age can all find ourselves in at some time, and through friends Rachel (Imogen Halsey) and Adam (Michael Dahl Rasmussen) we explore friendships and loneliness through a sensitive portrayal of these characters. Our story is also told in original songs and a live, performance sound- track from three musicians.

Rachel’s current personal life is a “mess”, but is the assumed life of calm and ordered Adam really any better, or is there something else hidden behind the public face of the man?  Mess has a script with a delicate touch as it explores the life of both in peeled away layers of emotions.

One interesting aspect of this story for me, being someone of an age that is not connected into social media to the extent that younger people today are, is just how much the events, actions and comments of friends (or perceived friends) can affect you as their social media feeds relentlessly appear on your “media feeds”.  This brings with it many positives, but also many negatives that I am honestly glad I never had to cope with when I was the age of Rachel and Adam in this story.

Outside of The Fringe, I review a lot of theatre and musical theatre throughout the year, and Mess is one of the little gems hidden away in this years Fringe. Mess deserves a far wider exposure and hopefully the chance to move onto a wider theatrical audience.
