Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2018 Medea Electronica Pleasance Courtyard - Pleasance Two Sunday 19th   August

With Edinburgh Entertainment & Arts

Medea Electronica at Pleasance Courtyard - Pleasance Two is one of my highlights of this year’s Fringe to review.  If, somehow, from the title you are maybe expecting nothing but an electronic music performance, then it’s time to get that idea put to rest quickly.

Medea Electronica from theatre group “Pecho Mama” is a dark re-telling of the story (there are a few variants) of Medea, a figure running through stories in ancient Greek mythology, and bringing us forward in time to a tragedy set in 1980s rural England. This dark story gains even more levels of darkness as Mella Faye gives an outstanding solo performance of a woman whose world and mental stability are rapidly dissolving around her.  Mella Faye is also the powerfully emotional vocalist of our talented on-stage musical trio with Alex Stanford and Sam Cox providing the electronic soundtrack to this story which also uses pre-recorded voices of Mella’s husband, two young children and other characters in this story.

There are many levels on which you can enter the world of “Medea Electronica”.  One is the music, and this is an exceptional piece of performance and recorded work in its own right, and you can also purchase the album.  There are nine songs on this album, and choosing one or two to highlight is difficult as everything hangs together as one delicately balanced concept album soundtrack. “Perfect World”, “Manta Ray” and “Into The Ocean (1 and ll) are high on my list of immediate favourites though.

The other entry into “Medea Electronica” is as a work of performance theatre, and this is one of the most powerful “solo dramatic  performance” works of theatre that I have reviewed in many years.  As the famous quote tells us, “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”.

“Medea Electronica” is simply outstanding theatre, story, music and electronic soundtrack blended into one, and it is easy to see why this sold out show received a standing ovation at the end of its performance.
