Gov’t Mule “The Tel-Star Sessions” is a special treat for all “Mule” fans out there and music fans in general. This album features the original band line up of Warren Haynes (guitar and vocals), Allen Woody (bass) and Matt Abts (drums and percussion) and consists of the band’s very first and never before released demos made in 1994 at Tel-Star studios in Bradenton, Florida.
The 10 tracks on this album (”World of Difference” comes in two versions) take us right back to the days when Gov’t Mule was a side project for Warren and Allen when they both had some down time from playing with The Allman Brothers Band. The tracks here were originally intended to be Gov’t Mule’s debut album, but for various reasons they have remained unheard by the public until now.
On the making of these demos the band collaborated with Allman Brothers’ sound engineer Bud Snyder and took legendary producer Tom Dowd’s advice to record all the instruments simultaneously live in a room. This ensured that these tracks have that classic rock sound of earlier days and you can clearly hear the musical influences of Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream and ZZ Top here.
Gov’t Mule of course went on to far outgrow the original concept of a side project, but this album takes us all back to the very genesis of this idea. From these tracks we can all hear just how fully formed the band were even at this very first trip into the studio. Given the talents involved in Gov’t Mule though that should come as no surprise to anyone.
Allen Woody is sadly no longer with us anymore having passed away in 2000, but Warren Haynes is still playing to audiences all over the world and will be here in Edinburgh soon as part of The Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival at The Queen’s Hall on Friday 22nd July.
