Downbeat Jazz .1940s Downbeat is a long running USA music magazine. These issues from the 1940s cover mainstream music of the time, and for these issues that covers mainly Big bands, Jazz and the emerging Be-Bop sound. Some attention is also paid to music in films and the recording industry in general. All issues feature current articles on the artists and music industry, classified adverts, commercial adverts and often big names of the time promoting commercial products.

The format of the "magazine" at this time is more that of a newspaper. The newspaper/magazine is actually a trade paper roughly 11 x 16 inches in size when folded out (30x40cms). The newspaper folds out to give a newspaper front page format. The newspaper is folded in half to give a magazine looking cover size of 8 x 11 inches roughly

The magazine / newspaper is mostly printed on a slightly glossy paper stock that gives good photo reproduction. For some reason though, issues from 1947 and early 1948 were printed on a far poorer quality newsprint paper that greatly reduced the photo and print quality of the magazine. These issues also have discoloured round the edges over the years in storage and also taken some small "spotting" marks. The magazine / newspaper returned to a higher quality format in 1948
