HOMEPAGE CD DVD & BOOK REVIEWS

"Check Shirt Wizard - Live In '77" featuring 20 previously unreleased tracks by Rory Gallagher is released on Friday 6th March 2020 on the Chess/UMC label and will be available on 2CD / 3LP / Digital HD / Digital Standard format.

The promotional material for this album pretty much sums up everything that you need to know about the 20 tracks here, and I quote:

“This 20-song, previously unreleased, set is culled from four shows (London, Brighton, Sheffield and Newcastle) during an early 1977 tour across the UK in support of Rory’s then latest album 'Calling Card'. Featuring fantastic live versions of tracks from that album as well as songs from the 1975 'Against The Grain' album and other live favourites.”

This new album is very much following on from the recent ‘BLUES’ album, Chess/UMC, and is obviously targeting the same buying demographics – long-time Rory Gallagher fans who want to have everything in their collection possible.  As with the previous album, "Check Shirt Wizard - Live In '77" will have some added printed archive information, but as I was only sent a reviewer’s copy on a single CD and not the commercial release, I can’t make any comment on the full package, but Chess/UMC do seem to be doing a good job with releasing the material and I am sure fans will find something new for their money here.

For those of us who remember 1977, it now seems a very long time ago, and “live performances” like these can bring back a lot of memories, particularly if you were at that concert on the night, so hopefully some good memories for your money here too.  This new album has attention to audio detail and has been mixed from the original multi track tapes from the archives, which were recorded by the Rolling Stones and Jethro Tull’s mobile studios and mastered at Abbey Road.   Back in the 1970s, “Live” albums were always an event looked forward to by fans and there may be some people out there wondering why it has taken 40 plus years to finally release these tracks.

There is not really a lot you can say about a release like this as it has such a specific niche marketing profile and most fans will already know many of the songs in some form at least over the years, but having said that, Rory Gallagher was an exceptional talent, and it is nice to see his music living on long after his far too early death.

"Tonight I don’t want a lover
I just need that special friend
Someone who will just hold me tight tonight
As they speak softly to me words of comfort
Hold me in that way they know I like to be held
Let the fragile little child inside of me
Once again come out for just a little time"
