HOMEPAGE CD DVD & BOOK REVIEWS

Rory Gallagher fans, Blues fans and music fans in general are in for a special treat in May this year as UMC Releases Rory Gallagher “BLUES” Compilation Album on Friday 31st May 2019.  This extensive release FEATURING RARE AND UNRELEASED RECORDINGS is available in the multi formats of 3CD / 1CD / 2 x VINYL LP, and chances are that the faithful will buy all of them.

The format I was sent up to review was the 3 CD format with separate CDs available for Acoustic, Electric, and Live retrospectives of Rory Gallagher’s long and influential career.  These 3 CDs will be available in box set format with an extensive booklet comprising previously unseen pictures of Rory and plus a new essay by award winning Blues/Rock writer Jas Obrecht but, at time of writing this review, only the CDs were available, so I am unable to give any comment on the extra CD box package contents.

The box set, from the information provided, looks like it is going to be something of great interest to the casual buyer and the fan who has nearly everything but, as always, it is the music that is important here, and each of these three CDs is full of music that Rory Gallagher fans have waited a long time to hear, and these releases celebrating 50 years since his first studio recordings feature early 1970s to later 1980s studio and live concert material

Captured here on these recordings is one of the great Blues voices of his generation and one of the great interpreters of The Blues with his unique Fender Stratocaster sound.  Rory Gallagher was always an interpreter of the classic songs of his musical idols rather than a note perfect copyist, and his own songs, whilst staying true to his musical roots, always found something fresh to say musically and lyrically. Rory Gallagher was, as these recordings show, not only one of the great blues vocalists of his generation, but a musician who could make his guitar “sing the blues” with a sound that was the envy of many of his contemporaries.

Normally I would pick a few songs out for examples on a review, but here that is just not required as the track listings below say more than I ever can.

"Mary Anne he said, I love you, you know it to be true
And if you will say that you will be mine
I will make for you a beautiful ring so fine
Make my vows on our wedding day to you
In the golden sun of the harvest time
Man and wife we will be, for all there to see"
