Joe Satriani releases his 16th solo album “What Happens Next” on the Sony/Legacy Recordings label on Friday 12th January 2018 and I don’t think any fans are going to be disappointed with this twelve track start to their New Year

10.Super Funky Badass

12.Forever And Ever

As always, Joe Satriani has attracted the very best of musicians to work with him on this new album and this PR quote pretty much says everything about this

“The new, instrumentally electrifying album features a power trio of legendary status;SATRIANI on guitar and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee bassist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple/Black Country Communion) and drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), the latter reuniting with SATRIANI for the first time since their work in the supergroup Chickenfoot. SATRIANI is once again joined by producer/engineer/mixer Mike Fraser, his frequent collaborator over the last 20 years, on What Happens Next. Fraser is well-known for recording/mixing every AC/DC album since 1990’s The Razors Edge along with his classic works with SATRIANI going back to the release of Crystal Planet in 1998.”

Joe Satriani is of course not only one of the best guitarists out there at the moment with an energy that takes any of us old enough to remember them back to the classic rock group days of the 1970s and 1980s, but also a legendary guitar teacher, and although his many pupils (Steve Vai, Larry LaLonde, Rick Hunolt to name a few) have gone on to develop their own distinctive styles, still at the core of their music is Joe Satriani. Joe is a man whose musical influence extends far beyond his own personal music and recordings.

If you are a fan of Joe Satriani, then this album will be everything you have been waiting for since the release of “Shockwave Supernova”.  If you are coming across this review and Joe’s name for the first time then take a chance on this one…there are few true guitar virtuosos out there at the moment who can (as this album shows) play effortlessly in any style that they want to and attract the best of musicians to work with them on a project…Joe Satriani is one of them.

2018 is going to be a very busy year for Joe Satriani as the album coincides with the launch of his G3 U.S. Tour that launches on January 11th and that awesome line up includes  Dream Theater’s John Petrucci and Def Leppard’s Phil Collen  There are some UK dates in the tour too (in April) but sadly, at time of writing this review, no Scottish dates on the list.
