"High Temperature", produced by Nashville-based Colin Linden, recently won "Best Self-Released CD" at the 2017 ‘International Blues Challenge’ (via Blues Foundation in Memphis), and was also named the ‘Hot Shot Debut’ on the Billboard Top 10.
"High Temperature" is the follow-up to JW’s JUNO Award nominated 2014 album "Belmont Boulevard", which was nominated for a Maple Blues Award, and held the #1 position on Canadian roots radio stations for 13 weeks and features songs penned with Ottowa based songwriter Dick Cooper. Liam Russell sings harmonies on several tracks, and JW welcomes his first recorded duet with No. 1 hit-songwriter Jaida Dreyer on her song "How Many Hearts" (co-written with Colin Linden).
JW Jones may be building a solid reputation for himself as a contemporary blues musician, but this album so effortlessly crosses into other musical genres that it is perhaps a bit unfair to pigeon hole this artist into one musical box. There is an honesty to the songs on this album. These are stories of real people living out everyday lives and many of us will connect personally with some of these stories and the emotions that they invoke, and there is on some songs here a classic “country” influence too, “Away Too Long” being one of them. Out of all the musical genres, “The Blues” and “Country” can always be counted upon for their honesty in telling the everyday person’s story from an uncompromisingly personal viewpoint.
True to the classic heartache of “blues” and “Country” there are some real gems on this album like “Leave Me Out” , “Same Mistakes” and the wonderful “Already Know”.
This is a new album that at times has a definitely modern airplay feel to it (“Price You Pay”), but at the same time a very “old” feel to it in songs in the classic mould like “High Temperature” and “Midnight Blues”. There’s even a nice trip back to the classic guitar groups sounds of earlier years with “Wham”.
