Elsa Jean McTaggart: Sing, Strings and New Things at theSpace @ Surgeons Hall - Theatre 1 is always one of the magical musical tours of The Edinburgh Fringe as its format gives Elsa free reign to sing and play whatever she feels like performing. No one really knows what the show will consist of (not even Elsa I think), and the result is always a warm and entertaining mixture of traditional songs and music and Elsa’s own self penned works.
Whatever the music that is playing though, there is always one constant focal point around which everything revolves – the easy warmth, humour and instant connection with her audience of Elsa Jean McTaggart herself.
Most attention for any audience is usually focused on Elsa’s vocals and fiddle playing abilities, but behind this there lies a gifted songwriter who deserves much more attention in this area. Some songs such as “Living on The Road” are light hearted and pleasant songs, but “Coming Home” has the potential to be, with the right wind behind, it one of the great “Scottish Anthems” of its time. For me, listening to Elsa perform “Coming Home” is worth the 5 stars of this review on its own.
There are so many different musical sides and voices to Elsa Jean McTaggart, but from one “voice” alone, it is obvious that Elsa Jean McTaggart needs to make much further exploration in to what the “Blues” voice inside of her is capable of. I don’t think even Elsa has stopped to consider too hard this unexplored avenue for future music.
Elsa Jean McTaggart: Sing, Strings and New Things is always an “unknown”, but it is always fun and always well received by the audience.
