Cindy Douglas with Tim Richards Trio "My New Jive" Album album review. Sunday 21st August 2016

HOMEPAGE PAST REVIEWS 2016 PAST REVIEWS 2015

“My New Jive” from top Scottish jazz vocalist Cindy Douglas with the Tim Richards Trio is not a new release having been available since 2012, but as Cindy is currently working on new material, this seemed a ideal time to look again at this album.

“My New Jive” is a twelve track album that has some new self-penned material from Cindy as well as standards and new interpretations  of jazz classics from Dizzy Gillespie (A Night In Tunisia) and Duke Ellington (Caravan). The album is a mixture of up tempo songs that play with mood, timings and rhythms in some interesting ways.  Some great versions of ballads here too – “Lover Man” and “Love For Sale” just perfectly suit a singer like Cindy Douglas who has a voice that can melt over you and soothe you when she is in this vocal range.

“Waltz For Debbie” with its more  up tempo beat illustrates just how easily Cindy Douglas can move from ballads to this type of material.

It’s nice also to hear some unexpected songs on this album such as “Alice In Wonderland”  by Sammy Fain and Bob Hilliard - the theme tune to the 1951 animated film from Walt Disney .

Overall, a well selected package of songs with something on it for everyone.

You can still get this album direct from Cindy Douglas at http://cindydouglas.co.uk/  and also from iTunes.
