At Last The Etta James Story Vika Bull and The Essential R & B Band  Review September 17th 2018

With Edinburgh Entertainment & Arts

At Last – The Etta James Story from Vika Bull and The Essential R & B Band is the accompanying CD (available now on import) to the “The Etta James Story” stage show starring Vika Bull and the band that has already been a huge success in Australia and New Zealand.  The 13 tracks on this album are a selection of songs from the show that features songs from the early to late years of Etta James’ long career (and many in between).

Vika Bull and her sister Linda have for thirty years been a very identifiable part of the Australian music scene with careers that have seen them span many musical genres, and the band that they both joined “The Black Sorrows” had major success commercially and artistically. Both sisters left the band in 1994.  This album is a natural extension for Vika Bull who already has a career with solid R& B credentials.

The Etta James Story is a musical tribute to one of the great iconic interpreters of songs of the 20th century.  The self-penned song output from Etta James was impressive,  and included classics like “Something's Got a Hold on Me “, “I'd Rather Go Blind” and “Pushover”.  All of these three songs are on this album along with surprises like The Eagles “Take It to the Limit”.  Like Frank Sinatra, Etta James always seemed to have an uncanny ability to know exactly what songs to sing.

All of the tracks on this album are classics in their own right, but Vika’s interpretation of “Sugar on the Floor “ and  “ A Sunday Kind of Love” are two of my personal favourites from the album.

An important note here has to be that this is Vika Bull singing songs that are in the Etta James song-book.  This album, like the stage show, is not Vika Bull trying to sound like Etta, and vocally their voices may be perfectly suited to these songs, but they are distinctively different voices.

At Last – The Etta James Story the stage show is currently on tour in the UK and reaches Edinburgh on 11th October at The Queen’s Hall.  Click here for further details
